Betting Bonuses
Almost every bookmaker advertises a bonus, but two offers with the same headline amount can be worth very different things. On this page we explain the main types of betting bonuses and what to check before you claim one. For current offers and detailed breakdowns, see our Bonuses & Promotions guides.
Types of Betting Bonuses
- Welcome bonus - extra funds or free bets for new customers, usually tied to the first deposit.
- Free bet - a stake paid by the bookmaker; usually only the winnings are paid out, not the stake itself.
- Accumulator boost - a higher payout on winning accas with a minimum number of selections.
- Cashback and insurance - part of a losing stake returned, often as a bonus balance.
- Reload and loyalty offers - promotions for existing customers, such as deposit bonuses or odds boosts.
What to Check Before You Claim
- Wagering requirement - how many times the bonus (or bonus plus deposit) must be staked before you can withdraw.
- Qualifying odds - the minimum odds a bet needs to count towards wagering.
- Expiry - how many days you have to meet the conditions.
- Excluded markets and payment methods - some bets or deposit methods may not qualify.
- Maximum stake and maximum winnings - limits on bets placed with bonus funds and on what you can withdraw.
How BookieScout Rates Bonuses
We judge a bonus by its conditions, not by its headline figure. An offer with a low wagering requirement, reasonable qualifying odds and enough time to meet them usually ranks above a bigger bonus with strict terms. Our full approach is described in the Methodology.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a bigger bonus always better?
No. The conditions decide the real value. A smaller bonus with a low wagering requirement is often easier to turn into withdrawable winnings than a large one with strict terms.
Can I withdraw a bonus straight away?
Usually not. Most bonuses have to be wagered a set number of times at minimum odds before any winnings from them can be withdrawn.
Do I have to take a bonus?
No. You can usually decline a welcome offer, which lets you withdraw your own deposit and winnings without wagering conditions.
